Epoxy Flooring in Dumas, TX: Garages, Ag Shops and Plant Floors
We coat garage, shop, barn and plant floors in Dumas, which the City of Dumas places 45 miles north of Amarillo, and three facts shape a floor here: slabs poured from the 1950s through the 1970s, lows of 32 degrees F or colder on 124.0 days a year at NOAA's DUMAS, TX US station, and work floors tied to beef, grain and energy. Census table B25035 (ACS 2020-2024) sets the median year built in Dumas at 1972, and the same survey's estimate for homes built in 2020 or later is 0. Our first step is to come out, take the floor's measurements and run tests on the concrete; the free written quote is built on what those tests show.
Moore County's industry puts hard-working floors near Dumas. The Handbook of Texas lists "Several feedlots, grain elevators, beef packers, and fertilizer plants", and the Dumas EDC recalls that the town "was once the world leader in helium production". Valero's McKee Refinery covers 5,000 acres of the Panhandle, 45 miles north of Amarillo by Valero's account, with "200,000 barrels per day (bpd) throughput capacity". Those plants sit beside farm shops, dairies, stores and the town's 5,612 housing units, and each floor below gets the system its load, its fluids and the season call for.
Dumas: Moore County homes, the NOAA station's normals and City rules
Dumas is the Moore County seat and stands where U.S. highways 87 and 287 meet, according to the Handbook of Texas. The City of Dumas dates the railroad to 1931, "when the first train puffed into town", and the Dumas EDC says BNSF rail passes through Dumas. The Census Bureau counted 14,501 people on April 1, 2020 and estimates 14,862 for July 1, 2025, on 5.53 square miles of land. TxDOT has studied raising U.S. 87 and U.S. 287 to interstate standards along a 57-mile route that starts at Loop 335 in Amarillo and ends north of Dumas at U.S. 287. The Handbook describes Moore County as "nearly level prairies varied by the Canadian River brakes" at 2,900 to 3,700 feet, with sandy and loam soils.
Census table B25034 (ACS 2020-2024) counts 5,612 housing units in Dumas: 1,285 from the 1970s, the biggest decade, 1,061 from the 1950s and 965 from the 1960s, against 460 from 2010 to 2019 and an estimated 0 from 2020 on. Table B25024 puts 4,021 of them in one-unit detached houses, 71.7 percent by our arithmetic; QuickFacts gives an owner-occupied rate of 62.1 percent; and adding up the rows of table B25044, 2,922 households, 60.5 percent, have two or more vehicles. Sherwin-Williams puts "Concrete floors with sealers or hardeners" and "Previously coated floors" on its list of slabs that call for extra preparation, and a garage slab in use since the 1950s has had decades to collect both. The housing and climate numbers for every town on this site share one page.
NOAA's DUMAS, TX US station (USC00412617) gives Dumas a long freezing season in its 1991-2020 normals. The annual normal high is 70.6 degrees F and the normal low 42.4 degrees F. The station's normals give a daily low at or below 32 degrees F on 124.0 days a year, a daily high at or above 90 degrees F on 73.3 and at or above 100 degrees F on 9.0. The median last spring freeze is April 21 and the median first fall freeze October 24. Normal precipitation there is 17.70 and normal snowfall 9.1, both in inches. Each of these is an open-air reading, not a slab temperature, which is why the thermometer goes on your concrete before any mixing. Our weather guide for Panhandle floors lays the normals against the limits printed on the data sheets.
Wind is the other weather fact a Dumas floor answers to. On Aug. 2, 2025 the National Weather Service described a storm moving toward Cactus, Sunray and Dumas that was "producing what was likely 90 to 100 mph straight line winds," and it reported "Powerlines snapped between Sunray and Dumas". For a coated floor, wind means grit at the door. Laticrete notes that its polyaspartic and epoxy systems are "nonporous, causing dirt and contaminants to remain on the surface," and advises "properly placed walk-off mats, inside and outside," while Stonhard says that the cleaner a floor is kept, "the longer they will last because dirt, sand, and other particles will not be worn over the surface."
Dumas has its own Building Department, and the City of Amarillo's rules carry no weight here. The department opens at 7:30 a.m. and closes at 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and works Friday mornings from 8:00 a.m. to noon. The City posts Ordinance No. 1180, passed in July 2020, on construction in the right-of-way; it requires a call to the State's "Call Before You Dig" line before a right-of-way permit and charges a $250 inspection fee. Nothing we have read from the City of Dumas speaks to coating a floor, so ask the Building Department before work begins, or Moore County outside the city limits. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, for its part, shows no flooring, coating or painting program on its list.
Garage floor epoxy on Dumas slabs from the 1950s to the 1970s
A Dumas garage gets ground before it gets coated, because an epoxy can grip no better than the concrete surface under it. Wolverine Coatings writes that the pull-off strength of finished concrete "is actually weakest at the surface," in the weak skin called laitance, which "must be removed to achieve the highest pull-off strength." We take it off with diamond grinders, not acid, to the concrete surface profile (CSP) the system's data sheet names on the ICRI Guideline 310.2R scale. Sherwin-Williams' joint guideline calls for honoring joints that move, sawing each one open again through the finished floor no shallower than 3/4 inch and 1/4 inch in width. The order of coats, from primer to flake to clear top, is on our garage floor epoxy page.
Cold and dew point decide the Dumas garage calendar. With 124.0 freezing lows a year at the Dumas station, an unheated garage can sit below the 50 degrees F minimum Sika prints for Sikafloor-264, and Sherwin-Williams ties amine blush, a sticky or greasy bloom on the surface, to epoxies "applied under low temperature and/or high humidity conditions". Summer brings the opposite problem: Sika's sheet shortens the pot life, the usable life of a mixed kit, from about 50 minutes at 50 degrees F to about 15 at 86 degrees F, and the station counts highs of 90 degrees F or more on 73.3 days a year. HomeGuide's December 2024 national survey prices a 20x20 two-car garage coating at $1,600 to $4,800; more rows are on our cost page.
Polyaspartic and polyurea for the Dumas spring and fall freezes
Polyaspartic and polyurea coatings matter in Dumas because the freeze season runs long at both ends: NOAA's medians for the Dumas station put the last spring freeze at April 21 and the first fall freeze at October 24. Laticrete says polyaspartics are "often viewed as a variation or type of a polyurea coating" and "may dry in a matter of hours or less". Citadel prints an application range of 30 to 140 degrees F for its polyurea base coat, while its polyaspartic grout coat starts at 0 degrees F and reaches past 90 degrees F; for epoxy the same chart says above 50 degrees F. Our polyaspartic floor coating page compares cure times product by product.
Speed has limits, and the sources print them. Concrete Decor magazine says a polyaspartic primer can be ready for its next coat "in 30 to 45 minutes" and that "Within 20 to 30 minutes it will thicken to the point that wetting capability is diminished," so batches stay small; it also calls the material "not a do-it-yourself product." Laticrete warns against polyaspartics "where a breathable concrete sealer is specified". Sunlight is their strength, since Laticrete says "most polyaspartics are UV stable and are suitable for exterior applications". HomeGuide's November 2024 national table prices polyaspartic for a 400-square-foot floor at $2,000 to $4,800 and for a 600-square-foot floor at $3,000 to $7,200.
Metallic epoxy for Dumas offices, showrooms and finished rooms
Metallic epoxy belongs in a heated Dumas room with a sound slab, such as an office, a showroom or a finished garage, because the clear coat shows whatever lies under it. Sherwin-Williams writes, "As the metallic coat cures, the pearlescent pigments disperse" across the floor, so no two floors match, and its Form G-1 assigns the metallic topcoat a CSP 3 profile. Westcoat's Liquid Dazzle specification names "hotels, casinos, showrooms, salons, restaurants and residential floors" as its uses and builds the system to 38-42 mils of dry film, mils being thousandths of an inch. How the base color and the pigment work together is shown on our metallic epoxy floors page.
Timing a metallic pour in Dumas means reading the room, not the season. Westcoat's EC-38 sheet allows application only between 50 and 90 degrees F, and the Dumas station's normal annual low, 42.4 degrees F, is an outdoor figure that already falls short of the first. Liquid Dazzle opens to light foot traffic after 12 hours, to normal use after a day and to vehicles after 72 hours, and Westcoat asks for a reseal "every 3 to 5 years depending upon traffic and UV exposure." Sherwin-Williams adds that denatured alcohol spritzed on the wet coat can "create unique metallic effects". Price data is thin: This Old House's national table (March 2026) lists metallic epoxy at $5 to $12 for each square foot, and no survey prices Dumas.
Shop and barn floors for Moore County grain, cattle and dairy work
Shop and barn floors around Dumas serve grain, cattle and dairy operations, so the system is picked from the heaviest wheel load and the fluids that reach the slab. The Handbook of Texas names "Fed beef, corn, wheat, grain sorghum, and stocker cattle" as Moore County's chief farm products, the USDA's 2022 Census of Agriculture ranks the county fifth in Texas for sales of milk from cows, and the Dumas EDC's 2018 employer table lists a dairy and a feedyard. Sherwin-Williams writes that "Use of steel wheeled vehicles versus rubber wheeled vehicles affects the choice of aggregate, chemistry, and application method" and that "In general, the thicker the system, the better the chemical resistance." Compare the high-build, broadcast and slurry choices on our shop and barn floors page.
Sika's Sikafloor-264 sheet shows how a working floor gains thickness: a prime coat of 6 to 10 mils, a wear coat of 12 to 15 mils, or a self-leveling slurry layer that covers 40 square feet per gallon at 60 mils; a slurry system, Sherwin-Williams says, "holds up to most wheeled traffic." Where a bay floor gets wet or oily, texture matters, and Sherwin-Williams says aluminum oxide "can be substituted to provide a much harder, longer lasting profile" than sand. In a general-industry workplace, yellow is "the basic color for designating caution and for marking physical hazards," under federal OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.144(a)(3), and a 1972 OSHA interpretation accepts aisle lines of any color at "any width 2 inches or more".
Commercial floors for beef, refining and retail sites around Dumas
Commercial floors in Moore County include beef plant floors, where hot water and cold rooms decide the resin. At Cactus, JBS broke ground on a $150 million beef plant expansion, Beef Magazine wrote on February 27, 2026, adding a fabrication floor and a larger room for ground beef, with completion expected "by early 2027" at a plant whose workforce tops 3,600 team members. For rooms like those, Sika's Sikafloor 22NA PurCem is a cementitious urethane slurry typically installed "at 3/16 to 1/4 inch (4.5 to 6 mm) thickness", rated for service between -40 degrees F and 212 degrees F, and its sheet says it "Meets the requirements of USDA for use in food plants." The commercial epoxy flooring page covers thermal shock and food rules.
Refining and chemical sites call for other resins. Valero's McKee Refinery "Produces gasoline as well as jet fuel, diesel and asphalt," and the Dumas EDC's 2018 table lists a carbon black plant; for chemical exposure Dur-A-Flex describes its Dur-A-Glaze Novolac as giving "protection against chemicals, acids, solvents, and high temperatures," with "Secondary Containment" among its uses and full chemical resistance after "7 days @ 70 degrees F." Where a plant floor must be redone in cold weather, Dur-A-Flex says its MMA floors "can be installed below freezing", though Sherwin-Williams notes MMA's "strong odor". Texas Comptroller publication 94-116 names refineries, warehouses and manufacturing facilities as nonresidential real property, where the total charge for the work is taxable.
Stained concrete for Dumas interiors, porches and patios
Stain works on a Dumas slab that will drink in color and has nothing on it to block the stain, which is why older floors under carpet or vinyl need checking first. In the water drop test of ASTM F3191, as Sika describes it, "Length of Time to Absorb <1 minute = Porous/Absorptive", while a drop still sitting after a minute marks the slab "Non-Porous/Non Absorptive". HomeGuide's February 3, 2026 survey sorts national staining prices by service level, from basic at $3 to $5 per square foot ("Simple, single color and sealant") to intermediate at $5 to $10 ("Two colors and sealant"). The stained concrete floors page explains acid and water-based stains.
Outside, a Dumas porch or patio stain sees freezes and a normal 9.1 inches of snow a year at the Dumas station. Among deicers, the NRMCA's scaling guidance says not to use ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate or magnesium-based salts at all, and it calls "calcium chloride and sodium chloride (rock salt)" acceptable. For the clear coat, H&C's ClariShield wet-look sealer sheet says "Not recommended for garage floors," and Euclid Chemical blames tire marks on acrylic sealers on "plasticizer migration". HomeGuide also prices a do-it-yourself stain at $35 to $60 per gallon, with a gallon covering 200 square feet.
Polished concrete on Dumas retail, office and shop slabs
Polished concrete suits a Dumas slab that is hard enough to take the cut and has no coating to grind off first. Gloss on a polish is graded by the ASCC Concrete Polishing Council on four levels, read as distinctness of image (DOI) and haze: Level 1, flat, reads DOI "0 to 9", and Level 4, highly polished, "> 70", with haze "< 12" at every level. On the Council's aggregate exposure chart, Class A, cream, is "85 - 95 % Cement Fines" and Class C, full aggregate, "80 - 90 % Full Aggregate". Grit sequences and densifiers are explained on the polished concrete floors page.
A polish in Dumas has to live with dust and grit tracked in from outside, so care decides how long the shine lasts. An ASCC-hosted Concrete International article from 2009 prescribes "daily dust mopping", warns that "Dirt and grime can dull a polished floor quickly by abrading the surface," and says to "Avoid cleaners that are highly alkaline or acidic". PROSOCO adds that floors treated with its LS densifier can still be etched by "acid concentrates and acidic foods". CPC Position Statement #2 reports wet results that "significantly exceeded the required DCOF of 0.42, even at very high gloss levels", DCOF being the dynamic coefficient of friction. HomeGuide's February 8, 2026 survey sets a soft matte polish at $3 to $6 a square foot and a high-gloss one at $6 to $15, national figures.
Dumas floor questions
How much is a garage floor coating in Dumas, TX?
No survey publishes a Dumas price, so the figures here are national and your own number comes in a written quote after the slab is tested. In HomeGuide's national survey of garage floor coating (dated December 24, 2024), a 1-car garage of 288 square feet (12x24) runs $1,200 to $3,500, a 576-square-foot 2-car garage (24x24) runs $2,300 to $6,900, and an 864-square-foot 3-car garage (24x36) runs $3,500 to $10,400; labor, the survey says, often makes up about 50% to 70% of the total. Our cost page sets these beside the other surveys.
What sales tax applies to a floor coating job in Dumas?
The Dumas EDC's taxation page carries an undated table that lists a City of Dumas rate of 2.00% and the State's 6.25%, a total of 8.25%. Whether tax falls on the whole job depends on the property: Texas Comptroller publication 94-116 says labor on residential repair and remodeling is not taxable, while the whole charge on nonresidential work is. Comptroller publication 94-105 has local tax on that work follow "the location of the job site." Your quote spells out the tax treatment in writing; for a ruling on your job, the Comptroller or a tax adviser decides.
Does the City of Dumas require a permit for floor coating?
Check with the Building Department at the City of Dumas before the work date, since nothing we have read from the City addresses floor coatings either way. The posted City rule we found, Ordinance No. 1180, governs construction in the public right-of-way. City of Amarillo exemptions do not apply in Dumas, and outside the city limits Moore County is the office to ask.
What temperature is too cold to coat a Dumas garage floor?
The product's data sheet sets the limit, and the limits differ widely. Citadel's decorative chip specification asks for "ambient room and floor temperature at 60 degrees F (15 degrees C) or above" from 72 hours before installation, during it and after it, Sika sets 50 degrees F as the minimum air temperature for Sikafloor-264, and Citadel's chart lets its polyaspartic grout coat go down at 0 degrees F. In a Dumas garage those limits call for readings on the day: the dew point, the garage air and the slab surface are measured before any batch is opened.
Should cracks be fixed before a garage floor is coated?
Yes: every crack gets its repair ahead of the primer, chosen by whether it still moves. ICRI's 2022 terminology calls a crack active when "the mechanism causing the cracking is still at work", and NRMCA's CIP 4 notes that "Most random cracks that appear at an early age, although unsightly, rarely affect the structural integrity or the service life of concrete". Moving joints are carried up through the new coating by a saw cut, as Sherwin-Williams' joint guideline describes, and we tell you which repaired cracks will still show through the coating.
Other Panhandle towns near Dumas
Amarillo, where we are based, is 45 miles south by the City of Dumas's count, on the U.S. 87 and 287 corridor that TxDOT has studied for an interstate upgrade; Canyon already sits on Interstate 27. Borger, in Hutchinson County, took damage from the same Aug. 2, 2025 storm the National Weather Service described moving toward Dumas. Each town page carries its own Census and NOAA figures.
