Epoxy Flooring in Borger, TX: Older Slabs, Hot Summers, Plant Floors

Epoxy Flooring Amarillo Co. coats garage, shop, plant and store floors in Borger, where two facts bear on most floors: the age of the slabs and the summer heat. Borger's median year built is 1965 in the Census Bureau's ACS 2020-2024 table B25035, so half its housing units are older than that, and a garage slab that old has had decades to soak up oil, paint and patching. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for the Borger station show 93.4 freezing nights a year, with lows of 32 degrees F or colder, fewer than any other town station in our facts, and 82.2 days a year whose high is 90 degrees F or above. Both are outdoor air figures, not slab readings.

Before any price, we come out, measure the floor and test the slab, and the written quote is free.

Phillips 66 places its refinery in town "approximately 50 miles north of Amarillo, Texas," and our crews drive up to see each floor before pricing it. At the site we measure, run whichever moisture test the coating's data sheet specifies, and log three numbers before any mixing: the air's temperature, the concrete's temperature and the dew point, the temperature below which a cold slab gathers condensation. We note cracks, joints and old coatings on that visit, and a free written quote follows. No survey publishes Borger prices, so our cost page collects the national ones, and the Panhandle weather guide lines data-sheet limits up against the region's normals.

Borger's housing, weather station, plants and local rules

The Handbook of Texas (revised September 20, 2023) places Borger "in south central Hutchinson County," and its county entry names Stinnett, not Borger, as county seat. The 2020 Census found 12,551 people in Borger, and the Bureau's estimate dated July 1, 2025 is lower, at 11,842, on 8.79 square miles of land. State highways 136, 152 and 207 cross in town, and the Borger EDC says Amarillo's airport is "just over 40 miles away." Lake Meredith lies on the Canadian River ten miles to the west, the Handbook says, and of the county's terrain it writes, "Broken land along the river and its tributaries forms fertile valleys."

By the Census Bureau's counts, Borger's houses are older than Amarillo's. Table B25034 (ACS 2020-2024) sorts the city's 6,142 housing units by decade: 896 from the 1940s, 1,389 from the 1950s, 1,206 from the 1960s and a later burst of 1,065 from the 1980s, against just 164 from the 2010s and 6 since 2020. Amarillo city's median year built is 1973; Borger's is 1965. Detached single-family houses number 5,175 of the 6,142 units in table B25024, 84.3 percent by our arithmetic. The owner-occupied rate in QuickFacts is 79.1 percent of 4,208 households, and adding up table B25044's vehicle rows gives 2,668 households, 63.4 percent, with two or more vehicles. The Amarillo Numbers page compares the towns.

NCEI, NOAA's climate data center, lists the station as "BORGER, TX US," and of the seven town stations in our facts, its 1991-2020 annual normals have the highest mean high, 75.1 degrees F, the highest mean low, 46.3 degrees F, and the fewest freezing nights, 93.4 a year. The station's highs reach or pass 90 degrees F on 82.2 days a year, and reach 100 degrees F or more on 14.3. NCEI's median freeze dates are April 12 for the last one of spring and October 28 for the first one of fall. Every one of these readings is taken in open air; the slab under a garage or shop runs its own temperature, and we measure it on the day of work.

Oil made Borger. The Handbook says it was founded "In March 1926, after the discovery of oil in the vicinity," and a Panhandle and Santa Fe spur line reached it by October 1926. Phillips 66 says its refinery here was "Built in 1926" and spreads over about 6,000 acres with about 620 employees. Chevron Phillips Chemical's Borger plant, with a specialty chemicals facility and plastics manufacturing, has been in operation since 1944, Nutrien's Borger Nitrogen Operations since 1968, and the Borger EDC reports that Golden Plains Community Hospital opened a 25-bed facility in 2011. The Handbook sums up Hutchinson County as "the center of oil, gas, petrochemical, and synthetic-rubber production in the Panhandle."

No City of Borger permit rule for floor work turned up in our sources, and Hutchinson County's directory shows a Road and Bridge office but no permit desk, so put the question to the City of Borger before work begins. Amarillo's exemption list stops at Amarillo's city limits. On sales tax, the Comptroller's city table carries Borger (Hutchinson Co) at a 2 percent local rate inside an 8.25 percent combined rate, and its additional-tax list shows two 0.5 percent city taxes in Borger, one for economic and industrial development (4A) and one for property tax relief (PT), each starting October 1, 1990. How tax applies to your job appears on our written quote; the Comptroller has the final say, and a tax adviser can explain your case.

Garage floor epoxy over Borger's decades-old slabs

In Borger, garage floor epoxy starts with preparation, since the median housing unit dates from 1965 and an older slab can carry oil, old paint and patches. Before any resin floor, Sherwin-Williams' Form G-1 guide (revised 02/26) wants "Removal of oils, grease, wax, sealers, curing compounds, laitance, salts and any other hydrocarbon-based materials," laitance being the weak skin of cement on top of a slab. Acid etching falls short; Sherwin-Williams writes that it "cannot remove curing compounds or many contaminants found in industrial settings." Our crews cut the surface with diamond grinders instead, to the profile, or surface roughness, that the coating's sheet calls for. The full layer sequence is set out on our garage floor epoxy page.

Summer heat is the second Borger factor, because pot life, how long a mixed batch of two-part epoxy can still be spread, drops as the batch warms. Sika's Sikafloor-264 sheet lists roughly 50 minutes at 50 degrees F, 25 at 68 degrees F and 15 at 86 degrees F, and caps ambient application temperature at 85 degrees F. The Borger station averages 82.2 days a year when the high climbs to 90 degrees F or above, in open air, so a summer coat waits until the slab and air readings both sit inside that sheet's range. Hot tires are the other caution: Euclid Chemical writes that "the tires heat up, causing the plasticizers to soften and leach out of the rubber," and says epoxy and urethane coatings are "less likely to tire mark" than cure-and-seal products, the acrylic kind most of all.

Polyaspartic floor coating in Borger: speed, sun and a short working time

Laticrete's FAQ calls polyaspartic an "aliphatic polyurea," and in Borger the case for a polyaspartic floor coating rests more on its speed and its color in sunlight than on cold weather, since no town station in our facts logs fewer freezing nights than Borger's. Heat is where it gets tight. Laticrete's Spartacote Flex Pure sheet warns "Increases in temperature and/or humidity will shorten working time, dry time and recoat windows," Citadel's chart gives its polyaspartic grout coat 20 to 40 minutes of working time, and Westcoat's EC-101 sheet reads "Do not apply when ambient or substrate temperatures are below 50 degrees F or above 85 degrees F." Our polyaspartic floor coating page compares it with epoxy.

Sunlight is the second reason. Citadel says polyaspartic coatings "cure quickly and are highly UV stable, preventing yellowing over time," and Sika says its Sikafloor-264 epoxy "Will discolor over time when exposed to sunlight (UV)," a difference that shows wherever an open garage door lets afternoon sun across the floor. On return to service, Citadel's chart puts the polyaspartic grout coat at 24 hours and epoxy at 36 to 48, both marked ambient dependent. A fast film still needs a dry slab: Citadel labels its polyurea base coat "Not intended for MVT resistance/damp concrete application," MVT meaning water vapor rising through the slab.

Metallic epoxy in Borger rooms held between 50 and 90 degrees F

Metallic epoxy, clear epoxy loaded with a pigment Laticrete describes as "aluminum platelets coated with metal oxides," has an upper temperature limit as well as a lower one, and Borger's summers make the upper one matter. Westcoat's EC-38 sheet says "Do not apply when temperatures are below 50 degrees F or above 90 degrees F," and its Liquid Dazzle system is "For interior use only." With the Borger station logging 82.2 days a year that reach 90 degrees F or more outdoors, we read the room's air and the slab against that ceiling before mixing. The full system is on our metallic epoxy floors page.

The pattern takes shape on the floor during the cure. Sherwin-Williams writes that "As the metallic coat cures, the pearlescent pigments disperse," and that "the color of the basecoat will influence the overall appearance of the floor," so the base color is picked first, and Laticrete says "Mock-ups and field test areas are required." At 72 degrees F, Westcoat's EC-38 sheet allows 45 minutes to work a batch, 7.75 hours before foot traffic and 72 hours before wheels. Sherwin-Williams adds that a sealing coat "should be applied when the substrate temperature is warmest and the slab temperature will be decreasing," so the first coat on a Borger slab goes down while the slab is warm, starting to cool and still inside the sheet's range.

Shop floors in Borger: fuel, solvents, fertilizer and heavy wheels

What spills on a Borger shop floor decides its system, and the Handbook of Texas names Hutchinson County as the Panhandle's center of oil, gas and petrochemical production. Each chemical claim we can quote belongs to one maker and one product. Rust-Oleum says its RockSolid coating "has excellent resistance to salt, oil, gasoline and other harsh chemicals." Dur-A-Flex sells Dur-A-Glaze Novolac, a novolac being an epoxy with a highly cross-linked resin, for "protection against chemicals, acids, solvents, and high temperatures," and lists secondary containment and battery storage among its uses. Sherwin-Williams' general rule: "In general, the thicker the system, the better the chemical resistance." See our shop and barn floors page for system types.

Fertilizer is where the sheets go quiet. Nutrien says its Borger Nitrogen Operations "produces ammonia and urea for use in fertilizer," yet none of the data sheets in our sources claims resistance to fertilizer, ammonia or urea, so before a coating goes into a farm chemical room, ask for that product's chemical line in writing. Hutchinson County's 2022 farm census profile counts 167 farms and 25,693 cattle and calves, and crops make up 69 percent of the market value of its farm products. Oil already soaked into a slab comes out before primer; Sika's methods are "detergent scrubbing with a heavy duty cleaner/degreaser, low pressure water cleaning (less than 5,000 psi), or steam cleaning."

Commercial floors in Borger's plants, hospital and stores

In Borger, commercial epoxy flooring runs from plant buildings to a hospital to storefronts, and the State's tax publication names most of those uses. The Texas Comptroller's publication 94-116 lists "hospitals, office buildings, refineries, warehouses, parking garages, retail shops, restaurants, manufacturing facilities, and other commercial establishments" as examples of nonresidential real property and says "the total amount charged for remodeling, repairing, or restoring nonresidential real property is taxable." The Comptroller's publication 94-105 has local taxes collected "based on the location of the job site." Our quote shows the tax line, and the Comptroller rules on any specific case. System choices are on our commercial epoxy flooring page.

Plant and warehouse floors are specified by film build and by what they face. In ICRI Guideline 310.2R-2013, a high-build coating runs 10 to 40 mils, a mil being one-thousandth of an inch, and Sherwin-Williams reserves mortar systems for "the greatest chemical resistance, thermal shock resistance, and heavy-duty traffic." Under federal OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.22(a)(2), "The floor of each workroom is maintained in a clean and, to the extent feasible, in a dry condition." For volatile organic compounds, the federal limit in 40 CFR Part 59 lets a floor coating carry 400 grams in each liter. We test the slab by the method on the candidate system's sheet before choosing a resin.

Stained concrete on Borger patios and uncovered interior slabs

A stain needs bare concrete that still takes in water, so in Borger it suits patios and rooms where old flooring has been pulled up. Sika's account of the water drop test, ASTM F3191, calls concrete porous when a quarter-size drop disappears in under a minute, and porous concrete is the kind a stain can enter. Color forms inside the slab, so its marks stay visible: acid stain, in the ASCC Concrete Polishing Council's glossary, is a "Reactive solution of one or more metal salts stabilized by acid that produces coloration in a concrete substrate," and NRMCA's CIP 3 puts craze cracks at "rarely more than 1/8 inch" deep. Our stained concrete floors page compares stains and sealers.

Outdoors, the Borger station's normals still count 93.4 days a year when the air drops to 32 degrees F or below, and NRMCA's CIP 2 ties scaling, the flaking of a finished surface, to "exposure to cycles of freezing and thawing." NRMCA's advice for outdoor slabs is to "Apply a commercially available silane or siloxane-based breathable concrete sealer," with the note that "The concrete should be reasonably dry prior to the application of a sealer." Euclid Chemical suggests penetrating sealers of the same family "where tire marking is or may be a problem." HomeGuide's February 2026 staining survey says to reseal stained concrete "every 1 to 3 years," which is a survey's wording, not a maker's rule.

Polished concrete for Borger warehouses, stores and shop bays

Polishing works the slab itself, so in Borger the question is whether a decades-old floor is hard and sound enough. The ASCC Concrete Polishing Council splits the process into stages: grinding with abrasives of 100 grit or lower, honing "within the 100-400 grit range" and polishing at "800 grit or higher." For hardness, the Council's Position Statement #7 points to Section 3.1.4.1 of ACI 310.1-20: "Mohs Hardness measured on slab surface is greater than 4." A densifier, a silicate that reacts inside the concrete, is among the Council's fixes for a soft surface. Gloss levels and how much stone shows are set out on our polished concrete floors page.

Grinding a slab releases respirable crystalline silica, which federal OSHA links to lung cancer, kidney disease, COPD and silicosis. Table 1 of OSHA's construction rule, 29 CFR 1926.1153, gives walk-behind floor grinders two control options, and its dust collector option calls for "a filter with 99% or greater efficiency and a filter-cleaning mechanism," with HEPA-filtered vacuuming between passes indoors. Our grinders run with that setup. For big plant or warehouse slabs, HomeGuide's February 2026 national survey says rates for spaces over 5,000 square feet "may drop to $3 to $6 per square foot"; no survey prices a Borger floor.

Borger floor questions

How much is epoxy for flooring in Borger?

Borger has no published survey price, so the numbers available are national. HomeGuide's February 2026 survey prices installed epoxy at $4 to $10 a square foot and lists one-car garages, 288 to 392 square feet, at $1,200 to $3,900; two-car garages of 400 to 576 square feet run $1,600 to $5,800. HomeGuide's own cost notes add crack repair, resurfacing where damage is widespread, and decorative flakes as extras. The dated survey rows are gathered on our epoxy cost page, and your own price comes in writing after we test the slab.

Which epoxy is best for a garage floor in a Borger summer?

The right one is whichever product's data sheet covers the temperature your slab reaches that day. Sika's Sikafloor-264 sheet sets 85 degrees F as its ambient maximum, Westcoat rules out its EC-36 epoxy above 90 degrees F, and Citadel's comparison chart allows its polyaspartic grout coat anywhere from 0 degrees F to past 90 degrees F. HomeGuide notes that "Epoxy coatings harden faster in warm temperatures," which cuts the time a crew has with each batch. On 82.2 days a year the Borger station's high reaches at least 90 degrees F, outdoors, so the slab gets measured first.

Do I need a City of Borger permit to coat a floor?

Ask the City of Borger before work begins; the public sources we work from show no Borger permit rule for floor coatings either way. Amarillo's "Work Exempt" page, which lists "Painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops, and similar finish work," is a City of Amarillo list and has no force in Borger. Hutchinson County's directory shows its Road and Bridge office, Borger Annex, and no building permit desk.

Can a coated shop floor in Borger stand up to fuel and solvents?

Some coatings can, going by their makers' published claims, but every claim names its own chemicals for one product. Rust-Oleum lists salt, oil and gasoline for RockSolid, and Dur-A-Flex says Dur-A-Glaze Novolac guards against acids and solvents and reaches "full chemical resistance" in 7 days at 70 degrees F. None of the sheets in our sources mentions fertilizer. Because our written quote names the product, you can hold its sheet up against the fluids on your floor before any work starts.

How soon can a car go back on a new Borger garage floor?

As soon as the product's sheet says the film has cured at your slab's temperature, and we put that time in writing for you. Westcoat's Liquid Dazzle metallic system allows "vehicle traffic in 72 hours," and Laticrete's TDS 432 asks that a polyaspartic chip floor sit unused for 24 hours. HomeGuide's February 2026 survey advises "don't walk on it for 16 to 24 hours or drive on it for 2 to 7 days." Borger's summer heat speeds most cures; a cold night in an unheated garage slows them.

Other Panhandle towns we serve

In 1926 the Panhandle and Santa Fe laid a thirty-two-mile spur from Panhandle to Borger, the Handbook of Texas records, and Pampa and Dumas serve as the county seats of Gray and Moore counties. Their pages carry each town's own housing counts, weather station normals and local offices; our home page covers Amarillo.
